Random Number

We’re going to generate a number between 0 and 50…can you guess what it will be? Whoever’s guess is the closest wins!

Use our random number generator to help pick a team to go first in a game or to keep math lessons interesting and exciting. How does it work? You can select the range within which the number generator works. Simply choose a number from one to nine million and enter it into the boxes. The box on the left will be your minimum and the one on the right will be your maximum. Hit clear to choose a new number. Then hit “Go” to generate a random number. Hit “Go” as many times as you’d like to continue producing new random numbers. Or, click the blue “Range” button to change the range.

Here are some math games and activities you can try using the random number generator:

  • Build students’ understanding of number order by changing the range and asking students to guess numbers within the range (ie. guess a number between 80 and 100)
  • Have students add up a series of two or more random numbers
  • Ask students to subtract a series of two or more random numbers
  • Have students multiply two random numbers
  • Have students determine the factors or addends of a random number

The possibilities are endless! The best part is no one can accuse you of favoritism when a computer model produces the random number.

How will you use the random number generator?

Ruler Inch

What would a three-inch pencil look like?? You can find out when you use this virtual inch ruler. Simply draw a pencil and find out! Or, measure your own drawings of flowers, insects, mice, and more!

To use the ruler, simply click and drag the arrow on the right side of the ruler. You can measure to the half-inch, quarter-inch, eighth-inch, or sixteenth-inch by using the buttons in the upper-left corner. As you drag the arrow, the measurement will show above the ruler. Toggle this feature on or off with the “Inch ON/OFF” button. Simplify fractions or have them show unsimplified by tapping the “Simplify fractions ON/OFF” button. Draw and erase objects to measure with the pencil and eraser buttons.

Students at all grade levels can learn with the virtual inch ruler. Advanced students can practice measuring to the nearest sixteenth and simplifying fractions. Younger students can measure to the nearest half-inch. Here are some activities to try with the inch ruler:

  • Ask students to draw a worm, insect, or snake starting at the left side of the ruler. Then, have students measure how long their animal is.
  • Ask students to measure objects they draw exactly and round to the nearest half-inch and quarter-inch using the ruler functions.
  • Have students toggle the “Inch ON/OFF” button to check their work. First, have them turn it off. Then, ask students to draw an object to measure. Then, ask them to write down their answers. Finally, ask students to toggle the function ON so they can check their work.

Counter Paint

Are you looking for a fun math manipulative you can use with the whole class? This online counting manipulative is very versatile. Use it to make graphs, practice counting, or model addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication problems.

How do you use the Counter Paint tool? Simply pick a color from the left-hand side of the screen. Then, click on the squares of the graph paper to add counters. The number of counters on the graph paper will automatically show on the left-hand side of the screen. The total will appear in the bottom left-hand corner. To turn the numbers off, simply press the “Numbers OFF” button. Press the eraser button and then tap individual counters to erase them. Clear the whole board by pressing the trash can button.

How can you use the counter paint tool in your classroom? Here are a few ideas. You might demonstrate how to do each activity with the whole class and then have students work individually or in pairs with the counter paint tool.:

  • Practice counting with your youngest students by adding counters to the board. Count aloud together. Turn off the number feature, then ask students to write the numeral that represents the number of counters on the board. Then, turn on the number feature so that students can check their answers.
  • Model addition problems. Represent the addends using a different color counter for each addend. Be sure to turn off the number feature! Ask students to determine the sum. Students can turn the number feature back on to check their answers.
  • Ask students to graph data, using a different color for each variable. For example, students might conduct a survey about everyone’s favorite pet. Then, students can graph the results using the counter paint tool. Encourage students to draw and color a key that explains the data.
