Solitaire

Did you know there’s a card game you can play all by yourself? It’s called solitaire! The word can mean “alone.”

Our online solitaire for kids is an educational game that is also fun. To play this card game, children must plan ahead using logic and problem-solving skills. This also helps children practice skills like categorizing, number sequences, and following complex rules. Like a puzzle made of cards, solitaire provides an engaging and fun challenge for students.

Online solitaire is great for early finishers, indoor recess, or even a math center. This engaging game is a great addition to your classroom or after-school club.

How to Play Solitaire

Playing solitaire is easy once you get the hang of it. It uses a standard deck of 52 cards. The goal of solitaire is to put all of the cards in order, according to their suits. The suits are hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs. You need to put each suit in order starting with its ace and continuing with two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, jack, queen, and king.

Rules for Playing Solitaire

Playing Solitaire involves a few different playing areas: the tableau, the foundations, the stock, and the discard pile.

Tableau

There are seven piles of cards that make up the main playing area or the tableau. These are the cards displayed in the center, with some of them facing up and some facing down. Here, you can move the cards around to uncover more cards from the piles. According to solitaire rules, you must put cards in descending order and alternating black and red. So, a black ten can go on a red jack. Or, you can put a red seven on a black eight. Moving cards on the tableau will help you uncover the cards you need to win.

If you free up one of the seven piles and leave an empty space, you can place a king there. You can also move large sets of cards that you’ve already put in order, as long as you follow the rules of alternating colors and the number sequence.

Foundations

The foundations are on the top right-hand side, where you can start building each of your piles of suits in order. There is one pile each for hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs. Once you find an ace, you can place it in its pile. Then, when you’re ready, you can add the other cards in order from two on up to king.

Remember, even though the goal is to complete the foundations, the tableau is where the playing happens. You may need cards that could go on the foundations to reveal cards on the tableau.

Stock

The stock is on the top left-hand side. Tap the stock to turn over a card. Then, you can add it to your tableau or the foundations. Each card you tap will move to the discard pile. Continue tapping to see a new card. After you’ve turned over all of the cards, you can start the stock over again. Just tap the stock “restart” button.

Keep moving cards around and manipulating them until you uncover them all and complete your foundations. When you do, you win!

It’s possible to win many games of solitaire. However, sometimes you’ll get a difficult hand that is impossible to beat. When that happens, click the “New Game” button.

Are you new to solitaire? Our online kid-friendly solitaire will guide you through the process. If you try to make an illegal move, the game won’t let you. So, experiment and try things out until you can move the cards where you want them to go. Soon, you’ll be a solitaire pro!

As a classic game of strategy like Chess, Checkers, or Reversi with a set of dice to toss in an element of luck, it’s no wonder that backgammon has been played for over 5,000 years!  Our free online backgammon game is simple to play with computer prompts to help develop the skills of beginners and experts alike.

For the uninitiated, the goal of backgammon is to get all of your pieces off the board before your opponent. A backgammon board is comprised of 24 long triangles called “points.” Points are invisibly numbered from 1-24 starting at 1 in the top right corner on one’s own side following a horseshoe pattern, clockwise, to 24 on the bottom right point. These are invisibly numbered because the precise point is numbered differently for each player sitting on opposite sides of the board.

Players each have 15 pieces (here in white or red) typically laid out with two on their 24-point, five on their 13-point, three on their 8-point, and five on their 6-point.  Players then take turns rolling a pair of dice to move their pieces clockwise around the board, until all the pieces have been brought into one’s home board: the final six points. You can split your move into the value on each of the dice for two pieces or move one piece the entirety of the sum of your roll. You may land your piece only on an unoccupied point, unless your opponent has only one piece on the point, in which case you’ve “hit” your opponent moving her piece to the middle of the board. To get back into play, the hit opponent has to roll a number matching a free point of the same number.

Once all your pieces are gathered onto your final six points, you can start “bearing off” where your pieces will come off the board. Be the first to do this and you win!

This free online backgammon game is sure to offer tons of fun to play while developing skills in logic, strategy, counting, and subitizing.
