Number Line Bars

This interactive online number line is the perfect tool for both virtual and in-person learning. Use it to teach many different skills ranging from counting to adding, subtraction, skip counting, multiplication, division, fractions, and more.

To use this online number line, click and drag the black box at the top to the right or left to see higher or lower numbers. Toggle the numbers that appear on the number line by clicking the white “1” in the bottom right corner. Add blocks to the number line by clicking and dragging them on or off.

You can show addition problems by dragging two different blocks onto the number line. For example, 2 + 6. If you align the blocks with 0 at the beginning, students can see that the blocks add up to 8 on the number line. You can reinforce this concept by dragging an 8 block above the other blocks and showing that it is the same length.

The online number line is also useful for teaching the concepts of zero and of negative numbers. They are clearly visible on the number line, showing that numbers are a continuum.

Invite your students to explore problems while using the interactive online number line. The manipulatives offer students a visual way to explore possible solutions.

Bug Catcher Number Line

This isn’t your average number line. Featuring bugs as manipulatives for counting or marking different spots along the line, this number line is engaging, whimsical, and fun.

Number lines help young students learn the sequence of numbers, model operations, practice skip counting, and more! Yet, without an engaging theme, number lines can be a bit boring.

This interactive number line is versatile and fun. Press the square box in the bottom right-hand corner to choose the spacing between numbers shown on the number line. Scroll the number line using the black strip above it. Then, add bugs to the line by clicking and dragging them above the number line. Make them disappear by dragging them off.

Wondering how to use it? Here are a few ideas for buggy learning:

  • Count each number on the number line by adding a bug at each dash.
  • Model addition problems with two or more addends by using a different type of bug for each addend.
  • Model multiplication and skip counting by alternating types of bugs. For example, to skip count by 3, add 3 ladybugs, then 3 flies, 3 ladybugs, then 3 flies, etc.

This interactive online number path is helpful for learning cardinality, one-to-one correspondence, addition, and subtraction.

Similar to a number line, a number path is a good stepping stone between counting real-life objects and the number line. Because it uses boxes or blocks, students can still see that one thing is being counted.

To use the interactive online number path, select a color to fill in a box on the bottom of the screen. Then, fill in a box by clicking on it.

Here are some possible ways to use the online number path:

  • Fill in each box with a color as you count as a class. After demonstrating this activity, students can do this on their own.
  • Model addition problems. Fill in the first addend with one color. Fill in the second addend with a second color. Then count out the answer. Invite students to do this on their own.
  • Model subtraction problems. Fill in the minuend with a color. Remove the subtrahend using the color white. Observe and count the answer. Invite students to do this on their own.
