Random Number

We’re going to generate a number between 0 and 50…can you guess what it will be? Whoever’s guess is the closest wins!

Use our random number generator to help pick a team to go first in a game or to keep math lessons interesting and exciting. How does it work? You can select the range within which the number generator works. Simply choose a number from one to nine million and enter it into the boxes. The box on the left will be your minimum and the one on the right will be your maximum. Hit clear to choose a new number. Then hit “Go” to generate a random number. Hit “Go” as many times as you’d like to continue producing new random numbers. Or, click the blue “Range” button to change the range.

Here are some math games and activities you can try using the random number generator:

  • Build students’ understanding of number order by changing the range and asking students to guess numbers within the range (ie. guess a number between 80 and 100)
  • Have students add up a series of two or more random numbers
  • Ask students to subtract a series of two or more random numbers
  • Have students multiply two random numbers
  • Have students determine the factors or addends of a random number

The possibilities are endless! The best part is no one can accuse you of favoritism when a computer model produces the random number.

How will you use the random number generator?

Playing Cards

Bring fun to your classroom with these virtual playing cards. Use them for teaching probability, assigning tasks, creating equations, and more.

To use the virtual playing cards, simply drag as many of the 52 cards as you’d like into the playing area. Flip them over by double clicking on them. Shuffle the whole deck by clicking on the trash can button. Draw on the screen with the pencil button and erase with the eraser. The trash can button also erases the screen.

Here are a few ways you can use the virtual playing cards:

  • Teach probability by determining how likely any given card may show up. Or, challenge your students to determine the likelihood of a hearts, spades, clubs, or diamonds card appearing.
  • Assign quantities to face cards. (10 for Jacks, 11 for Queens, etc.) Then, choose 2 or more cards and use them to create an addition or subtraction problem.
  • Choose 2 or more cards and ask students to create a word problem with the quantities that appear on the cards.
  • Designate a symbol (spades, clubs, diamonds, or hearts) for four different tasks students will complete. Then, flip over a card for each student to see which task they need to complete first.

Coin Flip

Lucky coin, lucky coin, what will it be? Heads or tails? Find out with the online coin flipper!

What is the Coin Flipper Virtual Manipulative?

The coin flip tool allows you to flip one or many coins at once. The simplified drawings of heads and tails make it easy to identify the results of the coin flip. Each flip is completely random, giving real-life results without the noise or the hassle of lost coins.

How to Use the Online Coin Flipper

This tool is easy to use. Simply click and drag a coin into the playing area. Then, tap the flip button to flip the coin. You can drag as many coins into the playing area as you’d like. They’ll all flip when you hit the flip button. To get rid of all of the coins, simply press the trashcan button.

How to Use it as a Part of Classroom Lessons

It is perfect for probability lessons. Use it to introduce the topic by projecting the coin flipper on your smartboard, allowing the whole class to see the results. Have students explore the probability that a coin will give a heads or tails response by flipping the coin a certain number of times. Here are some activities and lessons to try:

  • Predictions: Ask students to flip one coin 10 times. Have students predict how many times the coin will show up heads or tails. Have them keep track of how many times the coin lands heads or tails with tally marks. Repeat the activity several times to determine an average. This can help students understand probability.
  • Percentages and Fractions: Practice determining percentages or fractions. Have students put 4 coins in the playing area. Then, flip all the coins. Figure out what percentage of coins are heads and what percentage are tails. Make it more complicated by adding more coins to the playing area.
  • Heads vs. Tails: For this game, students work in pairs. Each student should choose whether they are “heads” or “tails.” Then, flip one or two coins ten times. Each student keeps track of how many points they earn. They earn one point for each coin that shows heads if they chose heads or tails if they chose heads. For the next round, have the partners switch sides and earn points for the opposite side of the coin.
  • Making Decisions: It is also an excellent tool for decision-making. Project it onto your screen when your class needs to choose between two activities. Then, assign each activity the outcome of heads or tails. Which activity will win?

Students can have fun while learning with these fun activities using the coin flip virtual manipulative. It is engaging while opening up learning opportunities. Use it as a part of your math centers, with the whole class, or with small groups.

Dice

Throw these virtual dice to bring fun to your math lessons. Useful for lessons on probability, dividing students for group work, playing games, practicing math operations, or determining the coordinates for graphing, virtual dice are great. They never get lost and are ready for use by the whole class or individual students.

To use these 3D virtual dice, simply press “Throw” to toss the dice. Select how many dice you’d like to use by clicking the number “1” and choosing the number from the dropdown menu. Choose how many sides you’d like your dice to have from the dice dropdown menu.

Here are a few fun ways to use these virtual dice:

  • Invite students to throw the dice and determine the probability that any number will show up. Then, change the number of sides on the dice and try the activity again.
  • Throw several dice. Then, create equations using the numbers that appear.
  • Throw dice to assign students to groups. To do this, assign numbers to corners or tables in the classroom. Then, throw dice for each child to assign them to a group and have them move to the corresponding table or corner. To add some challenge, throw 2 or more dice per child and have them determine which group they belong to (sum of dice between 0-25, between 25-50, etc.) Adjust as necessary.
  • Use the dice to make a decision. For example, agree that if the sum of the dice is over 20, you’ll do activity A and if the sum is less than 20, you’ll do activity B. Adjust to practice whatever math operation you’re learning.

Spin this fun online spinner and see what color or number you land on!

What is a Virtual Spinner?

A virtual spinner is a fun classroom tool that can make lessons engaging and fun for students. Just like a spinner you might use for a board game, this online spinner tool randomly selects a color or number. Our online spinner is completely unbiased and gives a random answer every time.

How to Use the Online Spinner

The online spinner is simple to use. Simply choose the number or color option by selecting the corresponding spinner in the top right-hand corner. Select how many colors or numbers will appear on the spinner by clicking on the number button, also in the top right-hand corner. Then, choose a number from the dropdown list. To spin the spinner, simply click anywhere on the spinner. Then, watch it spin and see where the arrow lands!

How to Use the Online Spinner as a Part of Classroom Lessons

There are many ways to incorporate an online spinner into classroom activities and lessons. Watching the spinner spin and giving students the chance to spin the spinner makes the classroom more fun and engaging. Here are some ideas to try:

  • Board Games: When playing a board game, use the online spinner instead of dice. You can use the number option or the color option depending on the game you play. Create a class board game by drawing a simple path on the board. Then, form teams and have students play the game using magnets as game pieces. You can even have students answer math problems before they’re allowed to spin the spinner.
  • Probability: The online spinner can also be used for teaching probability. For example, how likely is it that the spinner will land on the number 5? Or how likely is it that it will land on the color yellow? Change the number of colors or numbers showing on the spinner to demonstrate to students how probability changes depending on the number of options available.
  • Decision Making: Is your class having a hard time making a decision? Let the online spinner decide! Assign each activity or task a color. Then, spin to see which task or activity is chosen.
  • Create Groups: Have each student spin the online spinner to see which group they’ll be in!
  • Choose a Student: The online spinner can also be used to select a student who will perform a task or answer a question.
  • Create a Math Problem: Select the number option on the online spinner. Then, spin two or more times. Have students add the numbers, multiply them, or subtract them. You can even have students practice place value by writing out a series of digits. Then, they can write out the number using words.

The online spinner can streamline classroom activities while keeping students interested and engaged. Give it a shot and see how much students love spinning the spinner!
